Set in the heart of the former Villeroy & Boch industrial wasteland, in Luxembourg's Rollingergrund district, 'Le Carré' is part of the gradual conversion of a site emblematic of Luxembourg's industrial heritage. Developed as part of an ideas consultation initiated by the client, it contributes to turning this former production complex into a mixed neighbourhood where industrial memory and contemporary uses coexist.
The centrepiece of the site thanks to its distinctive volume and emblematic character, the historic building known as 'Le Carré' is to be carefully preserved and restored. A powerful reminder of the Villeroy & Boch earthenware works, it is imagined as a new destination at both neighbourhood and city scale. The programme brings together shops, restaurants, cafés and event spaces to create a lively place, open to residents and visitors alike.
The project also hosts contemporary tertiary functions such as coworking and co-living spaces, complemented by local food and drink. Some retail units will be reserved for partners and suppliers tied to the history of the works, reinforcing the dialogue between the site's industrial past and its new uses.
The building is organised around a central courtyard conceived as the heart of the project. Clad in natural stone and punctuated by a planted pergola, this semi-open outdoor sequence becomes a place to meet and breathe, around which the various functions unfold. It also brings natural light and ventilation into the interior spaces.
Strategically placed, 'Le Carré' forms a transition between the new residential quarter and the protected heritage ensemble around Septfontaines Castle. The project asserts a sustainable, unifying urban vision, where heritage, activity and quality of life meet in a natural continuity.
